O.K. I've got to get you guys/gals thinking correctly! If it's a Square, don't try to re-engineer it!! Sheesh! Those pianos that do not have key bushing cloth/leather, do not need you to get crazy! There is a very simple method of getting those back to acceptable side play. Here it is: for the front rail, invert the key. At the area where there is a wear mark, from the pin; take a round wooden tooth pick. Break\it in half. dip the point of the toothpick in cold hide glue. Place the point at the center of the wear mark, about a 1/16" back. With a SMALL hammer, tap the toothpick into the wood until you see the wear groove become flat.,,STOP. Break or cut off the toothpick. Do the other side with the other half of the toothpick. Sand the surface smooth. Put back on the key frame and ease if necessary. Do the balance rail the same way. Yer done, except for making sure the key pins are clean, smooth and polished. Get it? Good! Forget all this bull about making the mortises larger and putting whatever in there! Sigh!
