Was it originally equipped with a Welte system, and they needed to not have a beam under that spot, for part of the player system to fit? Or it might have been built when such installations were common, and they just decided that, after trying removal, it was not needed on any....... or they built all the pianos the same way, IN CASE one would get the player. (Yes, that's a pun.) Look at the bright side: you now have a free hole to do something creative with! !Gripping stuph!
