As promised, here's three pics of the tools needed to make consistent nice looking German Loops. In the first photo, (sent with this post), the looper block and vice grips are together. To explain a bit: The block shown has the screw head too close to the hole. It should be about .075" farther away. I used standard steel rod, (not drill rod). The Vice Grips are the 5" Needle Nose type. One jaw is made completely round and tapered, with no serrations left. The other jaw has had the sharp corners taken off and is tapered like the other, but I left the serrations on. The serrations a handy for gripping and "measuring" how big you want the loop. (just count how many notches from the tip and do that each time.<G>) The second and third pictures are my attempt to show the configuration of the jaws.
