I've seen this many times before. The problem is that water or booze has entered from the top hinge and gravitated to the dampers soaking them and causing them to stick to the strings. All those dampers will be rock hard and the glue joint of the damper felt to the damper block is not as strong as the new attachment of the damper to the strings so hence the separation. Robin From: pianotech-bounces at ptg.org [mailto:pianotech-bounces at ptg.org] On Behalf Of David Boyce Sent: Sunday, 20 January 2013 12:21 PM To: pianotech at ptg.org Subject: [pianotech] Fly dampers Why were certain notes on my customer's nice old German upright going "dunk"? Because the damper felts had come off the heads and stuck to the strings. This action has a set of "fly dampers" in the bass - not unusual - BUT, in this action, they are below the level of the hammers. See pic. I've not seen this before.
