Reply to: RE>Privacy in the workplace I would never, ever, never give my password to anyone that I didn't want to. I think her request is probably illegal. If it is not, go on line privately and only use your university account for university business. Ken Sloane, Oberlin Conservatory -------------------------------------- Date: 9/15/98 10.07 PM To: Kenneth Sloane From: caut@ptg.org My supervisor an assistant dean for our school has formally requested that everyone in her charge deliver to her by a certain date their respective email usernames and passwords. She says they will be kept in a secure place and used only in the event of an emergency. I responded in email saying that I was uncomfortable giving this information to anyone. I stated that I use email for work, family, and an education degree. If an emergency came about then I suggested that she contact the administrator of email services for the university with a request for the information. She is insisting that I must comply with her wishes and says that everything that comes through the server at the university is univeristy property. I have to admit I am stunned! What do you guys think. ------------------ RFC822 Header Follows ------------------ Received: by qmgate.cc.oberlin.edu with ADMIN;15 Sep 1998 22:04:33 -0400 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by bridget.rudoff.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id UAA07148 for caut-outgoing; Tue, 15 Sep 1998 20:04:19 -0600 (MDT) Received: from email.uc.edu (mail.fd1.uc.edu [129.137.244.3]) by bridget.rudoff.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id UAA07141 for <caut@ptg.org>; Tue, 15 Sep 1998 20:04:13 -0600 (MDT) Received: from uc.edu (t19-15.ra.uc.edu [129.137.229.192]) by email.uc.edu (8.8.7/8.8.6) with ESMTP id WAA11535 for <caut@ptg.org>; Tue, 15 Sep 1998 22:05:20 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <35FF1BDE.21D7E8@uc.edu> Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 22:01:03 -0400 From: michael wathen <michael.wathen@uc.edu> X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.02 [en] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: caut@ptg.org Subject: Privacy in the workplace Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-caut@ptg.org Precedence: bulk Reply-To: caut@ptg.org
