Hi Michael, A table saw is the best tool for narrowing shanks. Make a jig to shave a few thousands off each side (two passes). The saw will trim both the wood and the knuckle very cleanly provided you have a sharp blade. I am not sure where you can find shanks like those. Chickering was such a contrary SOB, making so much work for us down the line. Maybe a set of flanges cut the right length and a set of shanks shortened the same amount with a grove cut in each for a spline... Real precision work but it can be done. Brass parts can be made by a machinist locally. Or you can contact Jack Wyatt who seems to have all that junk laying around. Lots of luck with this one.
