You can photogaph the pictures in the books you have in either of two ways. Use slide film (Tungstan so the color comes out right), or use a good digital camera. Or you can take the book to a professional photographer and they can do this. If you are careful, and have some help, it is possible to scan pictures in a book, no matter how fragile or large. Since you are using the pictures for educational purposes, and not for profit, you don't have to worry about copyright.
