Hi, The string player analogy falls down because the players fingers sweat onto the strings causing pits to develop. The constant battering of the strings in various places causes damage as well resulting in strings going "false". Neither of those is a factor in a piano unless some very avant guard music is being played. What is a factor in pianos is atmospheric polutants. Homes with natural gas furnaces tend to have more tarnish build up on the strings more quickly. It is possible to spend 200 Canadian dollars on 4 violin strings, but the client changes them themselves. But how much would restringing an entire piano cost?
