---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment Keith - The jack I use is Starrett's "Little Giant" Jack Screw No. 190. It is 1.25 inches diameter and screws from 2.25 inches high to 3.375 inches. They are usually supplied with two extension bases, 1" and 2" in height, and these may be stacked. The head of the jack swivels a little bit to accommodate surfaces not quite parallel, similar to the tip on a C-clamp screw (G-cramp for you Englishmen). There are other tips and bases available for working with pipes, rods, etc. Starrett says they "easily lift 1000 lbs." and they do. Pianotek Supply is a Starrett dealer. (800) 347-3854.
