I too bought the expensive steamer, but my friend Chris Gregg tells me =
that he recently bought a much smaller and less costly version in a =
vacuum cleaner store and that it works beautifully for removing key =
bushings. Generally, I simply steamed the bushings out with an electric =
kettle, laying three keys at a time over the spout for about twenty =
seconds. If the bushings are stubborn, pre-wetting them with a wallpaper =
remover solution can be helpful. The Rival Express pot is also very =
good, because the thermostat control makes it quite versatile.I would =
suggest using the Bill Spurlock sizing cauls immediately upon removal; =
one will end up with remarkably uniform width mortices.

A local old-timer whom has since passed away used to fold a thick =
cloth in to a strip that would cover the bushings, wet it, wring it out, =
lay it over the bushings or other felt to be removed, then set a hot =
iron on top. I can already hear the questions. Won=E2=80=99t this =
cause the button or other glued things to come loose? Yes if the steam =
is left on too long. This same method is good for removing keytops as =
well.=20

This is what I do, on both methods. I guess I'm just a young old =
timer. (Or maybe it's an old young timer) :)=20
