Hi, Richard, As the CAUT committee co-chair with the overall charge of the Guidelines revisions, I will take at stab at your questions. On the one hand, my senior co-chair, Don McKechnie, and I discussed approving a revised document after the convention in order to insure that sufficient energy goes into the Symposium in Academia as well as the revision process. On the other hand, the excellent recent discussions and contributions have jumpstarted the process of revision to the point we will at least have a revised document draft proposal in place for discussion by the convention. As for your question about the hurry...Is that tongue in cheek? I don't think any of us feel like we have been in any hurry to complete the revisions process! Over the two years we have been working on this there have been long periods when the distractions of work have slowed our revision activity to a motionless crawl. But the spurts of creative energy on the list, and on the committee, have resulted in some excellent discussions which have provided a treasure trove of proposals based on a wealth of experience. The time is right for a document revision this year. I am working right now on compiling these various recommendations into a document which the CAUT committee can take to the CAUT Forum for discussion. This is an ever-changing document - I hope so, because that represents more excellent discussion and contributions. While the committee may or may not actually approve a revised document before the convention, I personally would like a document approved by September, before the school crunch and the December PTG planning deadlines. I hadn't thought about it, but I wonder also what impact, if any, your classification proposal would have, if it passes. I need to take another look at my alternate delegate material....But feel free to address this on this list. I haven't investigated the current home office inventory of Guidelines. I assume that there would a slight dip in their sale, since it is becoming general knowledge a revision is on the way. It is not that we are insensitive to the issue of cost, or a waste of publications after a revision takes place; this revisions project has been primarily an issue-driven task. I also expect the new document to have both a handsome hard copy version (like the current one) and a downloadable electronic online version similar to what is now on the CAUT website. Both serve important needs. I am sure I am not alone in my hope that the home office will receive thousands of orders for the new hard-copy version.... I see the guidelines revision as having a ten year planning cycle. It was ripe for revision a few years ago. I am sure enough will have changed in the world of the CAUT for another revision in 2010/2012. I don't know how that will affect the current inventory of Guidelines hard copies at the time, but we can sure work on that.... How are we to decide that the document is ready/acceptable? Is the home office going to print the copies, and if so, how many? Does anyone know how many copies of the current version are left in the home office? Are we running out ,which may necessitate coming up with the revision quickly? Richard West >>
