Conrad, I find that it is best to cut tiny strips from the sticky part of sticky notes (Post-it, whatever), and wrap them all the way around the string and stick the sticky part to itself (so there's a little tab created). Stays in place well, and leaves no perceptible residue. And easy to remove.
