(read mellow) as they lost some of their power and sustain through the
years.
  After touring a remarkable collection of historic keyboard instruments (in
which the host villified the modern piano without cessation), my wife
finally said "if that's the tone he's after, he would absolutely love Aunt
Dorothy's piano!" (1960's Sears & Roebuck 44 1/4" vertical PSO)
