The felt splits at the crown.  Some of these have been voiced w/glovers needles it would seem, which exacerbates the problem.  Usually becomes evident when shaping the hammer.  Application of even a little bit of steam gives some real interesting results!

  Will you please explain this. What is splitting? 

  As far the changes in perception of a piano, I guess one way to avoid doing a lot of work, is to wait a week before doing anything. At most, pretend you've voiced it, and ask how they like the piano after you've "worked" on it.
