A few techs from our discussion a couple of months ago do grind a slot and add rod. Mason and Hamlins have this design exactly. Margaret Hood >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hi Margret.... I restrung a Mehlin grand that had this. There are no agraffes in the middle sections like most grands... Imbedded in the capo bars were hardened/nickel plated rods, which can be turned to eliminate the string grooves....well...I found out in a hurry when I took the strings off and they fell out of the capos...I'm not sure if the capos were cast with a slot for these rods/or if they were ground in after casting, but I'd think casting a slot would not be a problem. The rods were only about 1/8" diameter if my feeble memory serves me correctly....I think that old Mr. Mehlin had a few good ideas....I'm surprised someone didn't notice this and steal it for themselves... but...that's the piano business....
