Susan,
Well, sometimes I'm a bit slow about such things. :-)
That's not the first time someone had said "And I know what that means" =
to me (when I didn't know). It was one Martin Luther King, Jr. Day =
while I was IWU. A piano was supposed to be delivered to one of the =
gyms for the day's activities. Unfortunately, I arrived to check out =
the piano <before> it arrived. So, I sat down at the end of the =
bleachers (closest to the temporary stage), my tool case was on the =
floor by my side. Before long, a very earnest looking man came up to me =
and said that he saw me sitting there <alone> and he came over to me =
because "he knew what that meant." Oh---how I longed to say, "You do?" =
But I resisted temptation, politely thanked him for his concern (even =
though I wasn't totally sure what his concern was) and told him I was =
the piano tuner, waiting to check out the piano which was supposed to be =
delivered soon.....

Hmmm, what <did> it mean?! =20
Not 100% sure, but my guess is that he thought it was offering you a =
"challenge." <grin>=20
I haven't run into the snooty faculty problem, but I work in small =
institutions. If they've had to scramble to find decent piano work, they =
are only too glad to see you come into a room.=20
