The front segment looks suspect; instead of a thick string cushion, there is only bushing cloth, which comes nowhere near to contacting/muting the strings. (to the best of my knowledge, this instrument has never been restrung) Would this segment originally have been braided? I'm going to braid it anyhow (it has a ring-time of 6-7 seconds when strummed), just can't imagine this segment being intended to ring, no matter the carefull de-tuning of the actual duplex segments. thanks in advance, all you good Baldwin folk! Mark Cramer, Brandon University Brandon We don't have a SD 10 at Alabama, but in another life, (back in St. Louis), I did tune for a small college that had one. It was relatively new at the time. A concert pianist came in, and immediately stuffed Kleenex in the front duplex area, and instructed me to leave it there. He couldn't stand the ringing it produced. So to answer your question, if there is braiding cloth in there, it was probably put there by someone who didn't like the ringing. Should you put thicker cloth in there to really reduce the overtones? The answer is probably yes. Most people will not complain they can't hear the over tones, but a lot more will complain they can hear them. Just my 2 cents worth.
