Exactly correct.
Pictures and descriptions of the shank slotting tool are on p. 19 of the
PACE repair book and p. 38 of the Guide to Field Repairs.
This is an excellent method.  
Once you pass your repair exam, you can do it any way you want, and it's
nobody's bizniss but yers.
