Well, I guess we could close the lid while tuning the bass. But what about
in
performance? I had one break1 during an anthem one time at a church where I
was pianist and it flew toward the choir. Thankfully no one got hit!

The lid up or down doesn't matter. I had a bass string in the second octave
on an S&S M, break while tuning with the lid down. It flew nearly 30 feet
across the front of the church. I raised the lid to splice the string, and
the string failed again, sailing almost the distance of the first flight. I
put a shipping blanket along the back of the rim and closed the lid on
it...just in case...nothing let go. So, I can't say this technique
prevented the flight of a bass string, but it did ease my mind.
