Yep. No problem. And if it's buzzing, that's a pretty good sign that it
isn't wedged tight. I've removed them from time to time for one purpose or
other with no ill effect. I doubt very much that anything bad would happen
if you left it out permanently, except perhaps in the course of moving the
piano (putting it on its side). That's just a reasonable guess, of course.
Another option, though, would be to apply linseed oil to the crack.
