I have been told, on a few occasions, that I was called because I am a woman. But those times are few and far between....they don't pay the mortgage, that's for sure. I have encountered many more incidents where I was asked if a man could be sent out. And when I was building my business, other techs in the area told me they tried to refer clients to me and often when they heard a woman's name, they asked if they could have the name of a man. (These people did not know me and had never heard my name before.) So, while in a few cases we might actually get a break....it isn't the usual reason we get business. A woman who is successful in this business doesn't get that way because she has been favored over men. All of us have paid our dues like anyone else and worked hard to get where we are. Don't worry, guys...sexism is still rampant. I'm sure most of you will have plenty of work, as long as you do a good job and as long as pianos are out there. Women in the business are not going to be taking work away from you. jeannie Jeannie Grassi, RPT <mailto:jcgrassi@earthlink.net> mailto:jcgrassi@earthlink.net _____ From: caut-bounces@ptg.org [mailto:caut-bounces@ptg.org] On Behalf Of Barbara Richmond Sent: Friday, January 20, 2006 9:26 AM To: College and University Technicians Subject: Re: [CAUT] disability insurance You guys are so funny. It's true that during my career I have had some customers say they were glad to find a female piano tech, mostly in response to a couple techs in the area that over-stayed their welcome by talking too much or even made, uh, unwelcome advances. I believe most referrals came to me because folks were pleased with my work. But, just so you know, early in my career, I was often mistaken for the piano tuner's secretary and one time, when the customer realized that I (the female) was indeed the piano tuner, she said, "Well, I'd rather have a man!" ;-) Barbara Richmond, strange, but female ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Busby <mailto:jim_busby@byu.edu> To: College and University <mailto:caut@ptg.org> Technicians Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2006 5:43 PM Subject: RE: [CAUT] disability insurance Jeff, Hummmmm.. That may indicate the need for more women technicians. It could also mean that men techs need to be less "strange". :- )" So that means I either have to have a sex "reassignment" operation or a strangectomy. Great. I have no idea which one would be the more expensive or arduous. :-( JeffO ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
