---------------------- multipart/mixed attachment Greetings Fellow Institutionalized Technicians, Attached is a draft of the outline I put together for a workshop=20 entitled, "Ten Things Every Musician Should Know About Pianos." Please=20 allow a few words of explanation before diving into it. Some background first. I am a regular guest speaker at piano=20 practica(?), composition classes and the like on subjects such as how=20 the piano action works, tuning systems, and non-traditional piano use. =20 So it was a natural progression for the piano faculty to invite me to=20 conduct a two and a half hour workshop as part of our January interim=20 semester. It started out being for pianists only, but there was so=20 much interest from composers and other music students that we opened it=20 up to everyone. The goal was to make some essential points amidst a=20 shotgun approach to multitudinous aspects of piano-abilia. We started=20 with some entertaining video footage, then launched into an action=20 packed hour and a half of lecture/discussion following (but not limited=20 to) the outline. We finished up with time for attendees to try their=20 hand at tuning a unison and retrieving a pencil from behind various=20 grand piano fallboard designs. And now for a few anticipatory remarks: OK, ok. I realize that: 1) This contains far more than merely "Ten Things."; in fact, it's=20 closer to EVERYTHING I would like musicians to know about pianos,=20 packaged under ten headings to make it more palatable (or perhaps we=20 should re-title it: "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Pianos=20 But Didn't Know to Ask"); 2) Many of the notations in the outline are short-hand for things I=20 expound upon extemporaneously; 3) It is challenging to get through this highly introductory "list" in=20 1 1/2 hrs.; I skim over much of the nomenclature and other items-and=20 acknowledge doing so-in the interest of introducing the terminology and=20 concepts so that when one of you attempts to communicate with one of=20 these students, some of the lingo will at least ring a bell; 4) There may be things that some of you wildly disagree with: Let's=20 hear about it-don't be bashful, now. No offense intended; 5) This is a work in progress; 6) The original, unedited outline actually elicits laughs from=20 uninitiated readers, assuming a rather broadminded outlook on politics,=20 religion and sex (CalArts IS, after all, a private, left-coast art=20 institute.) But, hey.I was asked to share what I have, so here (albeit somewhat=20 edited) it is! Cheers, Alan Eder, RPT California Institute of the Arts ---------------------- multipart/mixed attachment A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
