This won't help with punchings, of course, but a great way to avoid moth damage in hammers is to play the piano. Larvae can't survive the concussion -- part of the reason folks used to beat wool rugs. And it's the larvae (of all these species, inc. carpet beetles) that do the damage, not the adults. (I've got a great Victorian book on insects that suggests moving larvae among woolens of different colors, claiming they'll create rainbow cocoons. <g>) Pheremone traps are a great solution and available for many species of insects (inc. carpet beetles, et al.).
