Hi Kent,
I had a similar situation in one of my schools.  It looked like someone
kicked it with their heel.  The fix was more than the piano was worth.  The
piano was considered totaled.  
Let us know what happens.

Discovered this morning, Yamaha U1 in the band/orchestra room; was a  
very nice piano until this.

Looks like it met with the business end of a hammer, or a  
percussionist's mallet, perhaps.

What would _you_ tell an insurance company about what it would take to  
do a cosmetically pleasing repair?
