Dan, Good question, which has elicited some good responses so far. I would add the analogy that in swinging at a baseball or driving a golf ball, after the energy is imparted to the ball, the deed is done. Why, then is the follow-through so important? Could it be that what happens AFTER the moment of contact effects the moment? And, especially in piano playing, it could be the case that after playing a few notes, the pianist's approach to the keys is calibrated by rapidly learned expectations. Maybe.
