Google <gill green tuner history> for some notes on the subject. The 1835 New York City directory lists five men who identified themselves as tuners: Augustus Brumley, Levi Dederer, Theodore Marschhausen ("Professor of tuning"), David Peek, and James Pirsson, but there must have been many more.
