So what's the problem with comparing the hammer flange height 
against the string height at strike point, compared to the 
bore distance of the hammers? Wouldn't that give you a 
reasonably rational ranging shot, rather than random guessing, 
as to the state of the geometry?

Just an observation from the cheap seats.
