[CAUT] Fw: Piano - UNL Visitor's Center

Ah, yes, orders from the President's Office do tend to shoulder other
things aside.

Free advice (you get what you pay for, or less...):

Surrender. From their end, your job is to meet the compelling needs of
The University. They do have a point, up to a point.

Give them options, and let them choose from the options available.
NEVER promise anything you can't deliver. If they ask the impossible,
by all means tactfully point out that it's impossible, but do follow
up quickly with what IS possible. They really do have to choose from
the available options, one way or the other. It's just that they
sometimes don't want to admit it. Or don't recognize the consequences
of the decision. (One of the options IS to enjoy the fallout of your
abdicating on work already scheduled. But it's kind of your job to
make sure that the fallout ends up on them, not on you. They would be
well-served to be aware of the consequences. I mean, I gather that
you're set up for work for Bernadette Peters--do they really want the
people over there on their case because you got pulled out last
minute? If they indicate that that would be just fine, then let the
other organizers know about it right away so the fighting can go on
between those responsible--not you!!) Most of the time just indicating
what choices are reasonable at this time is enough. But when two gigs
conflict directly I tend to bump the decision up to the proper pay
grade, if you get my meaning.

Good luck. Know that you'll do your best, and that's good enough.

Doug
