I checked in with John Dewey on the S&S "A"
frame that I may be doing. It was quite pricey. In general terms he
prefers to replace the capstan rail entirely along with re-doweling the
others. In his experience for whatever reason he has seen a number of
these particular rails split later after re-doweling, probably because it has
holes both on the top and bottom. Since the hammer rail is in such close
proximity to the let-off rail it is a tricky operation and obviously requires
precise alignment re-soldering of both rails.

He will supply the shipping crate which he
acknowledges is very heavy but he is concerned about shipping damage with
anything less. Upon return of the overhauled action frame you return the
crate back to him empty, thus the crate itself makes two complete round
trips. His general estimate which includes the let-off rail replacement,
the replacement of all the other rail dowels, polishing all the brass,
re-drilling all the screw holes and let-of screw holes, and then ready to go, is
about $800.00 +/-. You can count on another $350+ spent on shipping
the crate back and forth. Bottom line, expect a total bill of about
$1150.00+ for the complete job. Don't forget to work that
equation in when giving a customer an estimate!!
