Unless you are pouring it on, there's no need for protective cover. I apply it as I tune (when I come upon the offending pin), and go back to that pin to re-tune when I am done. It cures pretty fast unless it is dead dry of winter, below 15% RH. I blow on it when it's real dry, and that seems enough to do the trick most of the time. Accelerator can discolor the plate paint - as can stray CA on some finishes, so use care with the tip, getting it over the hole before any CA runs out, especially on your fussy customer instruments. I first found this out on a 5 year old Steinway B. Turned the paint green.
