Barbara,
BYU HI, an "All Steinway" school, did a side by side comparison
between a Sauter Omega (220cm) and a Steinway D with the music faculty
when they were choosing a new instrument. They chose the Sauter as
the more musical instrument. I've had one next to a concert grand
too, and it was the more powerful instrument as well. Your school
is probably not in my dealer territory. There aren't a whole lot of
dealers yet. I can put you in-touch with Sauter USA who can connect
you with your nearest dealer. Sauter will compete in an open
bidding process and you might want to check it out. Sauter will
have an new (not played-in) Omega in Kansas City at the exhibit. If
you have a chance stop buy and dig into the details. It is a very
technician-friendly design. I would definitely prefer it over a
Yamaha or a NY Steinway when it comes to quality of technical
execution. Tone is a matter of preference, but I do like being able
to hear Debussy clearly as opposed to the mush we've all become
accustomed to.

Are you ready? The building is just being
planned. :-) The head of the humanities department and
I are brainstorming--we've talked of storage, humidity control,
etc. It's sort of odd that the piano budget is in place this fiscal
year, but the building isn't there yet. The C7 is indeed on the
list of possibilities--especially since I think the C7 at the church I
attend could possibly be the nicest one in the world.
Next week is the big meeting on design, but I'll be in
KC! I've made a list of my concerns for the department head.

Our East Campus just finished remodeling a
lecture/performance hall that seats about 300. The stage is very
small and they want to ressurect an east campus choir. Their piano
is way too small (a Baldwin M), but the stage is way too small as well,
so they will have to mike it. A Sty D or even a B would limit the
size of the choir.

Barbara, did you consider a Yamaha
c-7? I beleive it is 7'6". How big is the
stage?
