We haven't yet rented to non school
activities, but to other departments. Many times the Dean puts on
a powerpoint of ragtime with several pieces played. (He's very good
at Joplin). But, the piano faculty is all giddy of a restored model
A and could perhaps spread the word around town creating more than an occasional
gig with the Dean increasing the piano tech's and business secretary's
workload. I have enough recitals and concerts to prep for!
This Steinway will be the first piano
the School of Music has as a designated around the campus instrument. My
goal is to have this piano available to the dean and faculty and students
without the need of disrupting class instruments. We just don't have
a proper policy in writing concerning other schools wanting to rent. I
doubt that we would rent privately unless it was the Chancellor of the
university or other high mucky-muck.
The past year we started charging rent for requests
of our pianos by
non-music department events on campus. That would include various
conferences, weddings, occasional student events, etc.... We would
not
consider sending one our pianos off campus for an event independent of
the music department. If the music department was to sponsor an event
off campus or had some significant faculty involvement, it's possible an
exception might be made to loan an instrument for that purpose.
They are not available to rent by the public, and I hope it stays
that
way. Sounds like a nightmare.......

I can imagine that a traditional old policy like that, started with good
faith and will toward the community, could be a hard one to change.
good luck,
