Replacing the guide rail with a new one isn’t hard though, and it seems one can improve on most of them, especially the “between the strings” hole spacing, and usually improve the “straight line down” to the dampers as well. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> No one has mentioned the tool that Eric uses at Steinway for the hole spacing. It’s simply a punch mounted on the bottom of rectangular bar, and by drawing a line down the center of the guide rail, installing the rail, then (strings are in) you simply use this bar to center the punch exactly between the strings. Since the punch is exactly in the center of the bar, by lightly touching both strings (twisting the bar slightly) it centers the hole perfectly between the two strings. (Is that clear?)<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> I’ve used round center punches for this, and change sizes until it barely fits. Eric’s tool is better because it will adjust to any width. Although I missed the presentation I believe it consists of using the sawing off the old "cap" and using it only as a pattern for the new one.
