At the Institute this year in Grand Rapids, Robert Murphy will be teaching a class on harpsichord and fortepiano service. As Fred pointed out, the topic of servicing historic  instruments is definitely in the plans as part of a curriculum for a CAUT certification. For the purposes of general operational instruction on the topic, I don’t think we really need to go far afield to find a person to teach… Perhaps Robert Murphy at Oberlin would be a prime candidate with assistance from Fred Sturm and/or myself. I know Fred has built a few instruments and I’ve been building and messing around with them (in my spare time, of course) since 1979 when I built a Hubbard kit. Bringing someone to work on the instrument, and hanging out, watching, getting some instruction is probably the best option. Or maybe going to where someone is doing some work. Kathy Perl of the San Francisco area or Anne Acker of Savannah are a couple I'd recommend (Kathy is mostly a performer, but does a fair amount of re-quilling and prepping work, and is willing to teach). Both can be found easily on the web.
