<font size=3>Hi Cy,<br>
First comment: These dampers need a complete regulation. From
the photo you can see uneven spacing and a tipped head. The bottom
of the dampers need to be trimmed to be just about flush with the bottom
of the strings. I prefer to remove the damper and trim them with a
sharp pair of surgical scissors, using the string indentation as a
guide. You can also use a sharp pencil to scribe a line,
using the underside of the string as a guide<br>
The dampers seem to have either a temp strip or mutes
inserted with out activating the pedal. The wire is squeezed against the
felt and tears as the note is played.<br><br>
Short term fix if you get lucky ;-) Use a pair of smooth jaw
parallel pliers and gently squeeze the bleeding string to the centre
string. The squeeze is done just in front of the agraffe. Some
times lifting all 3 strings and refitting the hammer will solve the
problem.<br><br>

recent vigorous concert on an S&S D, a low tenor damper was
bleeding. As it dropped onto the strings, it shifted to one
side. The problem turned out to be that one side of the
"W" had folded over the string (see picture). I
straightened it out, and then examined the situation from inside the
action cavity (second pic). The extended "tail" of the
wedge was shredded. It still wasn't damping right, so I went to
trim it to match its neighbors. The loose piece just pulled away in
my fingers as I tried to cut it.<br>

necessary. It looks like the fix is to replace that damper felt,
right? (At least the front half that was damaged).<br>

it drops straight onto the strings. A tiny amount of added finger
pressure does the trick. I tried lowering the damper wire into its
support block a bit, but then the sostenuto tab is too high. Are
there any short-term fixes for tomorrow's concert?<br>
