The best source I have found for a "room humidifier"
is the Sears catalogue. It's been a long time since I checked, but I think
you could get two of them for $1000. Free-standing, hold maybe 5 gal/20
litres, with humidistat. Function by means of a fan blowing air through
an absorbant membrane, which wicks the water up from the tank. I would
probably get two in your situation, because one might not be enough to
overcome the HVAC system's air flow rate (assuming building codes are similar
in Canada to what we have in the US for public buildings). In fact, two
might not be enough to maintain 40% or so, but only experimentation will
tell.
<br> If you have plumbing in the shop, or close by, you
can run a small diameter tube to the unit through a float valve, and save
the time of filling it all the time. This kind of tubing, connectors and
float valves is very easily available in my area, since they are used for
evaporative air conditioners (the most common type here). I don't know
how available they would be in your area.
