With a string of broken bass strings I would be interested in knowing about
tension, breaking % and the contour of the inside of the agraffe.
By measuring the speaking lengths, cores, and wrap diameters the scale can be
evaluated for excessive tension relative to breaking %. A lower tension
scale can be designed which will likely help the situation.
The agraffe should have a round cross section simular to the capo bar
(previously discussed here.
One final thought. Test an old broken string for degree of maliability by
making repeated 90 degree bends in the wire. Any number less than three or
four would indicate the wire is too brittle.
