Hi, Lloyd Someone else may be able to give you an "angle of the dangle" answer, but, here's a practical side (or is that "piano"). One consideration to be mindful of is that the "business" end of dial calipers are very thin. This can be a good thing sometimes but a bad thing when measuring bass strings. The Jaws have a tendancy to measure between the coils of wire. This is solved by using the upper part of the jaws, or, taking the measurement diagonally. I have used a digital (highly recommend) for the past 10 years. The one I currently own is capable of reading in inches as well as millimeters, as well as being able to zero it out at any point along it's travel.
