I'm too cheap to just up and buy the battery powered digital caliper, but the inexpensive plastic ones with a dial work great for measurements critical to 0.01", and cost $10 to $15 US. A micrometer is still my tool of choice for measurements finer than that. I found a digital micrometer at a pawn shop for thirty bucks, and I'm still waiting for that bargain caliper.
