Of course, who (except for your readers) will know whether or not you
actually took the time to get the permission in the first place?  It's
just common courtesy, at this point, to ask the author for permission to
reprint.  Depending on which side of the fence you sit, anything
transmitted to this list is considered published or copyrighted
material.  If you care to read up on it, check out the Berne Convention.
It's widely available on the Internet.

As I've said many times, I'm usually happy to agree to let anyone use the
stuff I write (if any of it is *worth* reprinting! :-) just as long as I
get some kind of note saying so.
