Greg, As usual Don makes an accurate comment, but I would only add that we should remember what happens to wood as it is drying out. Initially, the surface shrinks and holes get larger, but eventually the entire piece will shink, holes included. Damper guides are made of much less dense wood and are much more exposed than is a pinblock. In addition, damper guides frequently are not finished, unlike many pinblocks, which may have a coat of sealer at least. Having said that however, your guides should be bushed with just enough play that normally this is not a problem. Dennis Johnson St. Olaf College
