HI RICHARD,
Thank you for your comment about the back check/hammer tail.
I must have forgotten to mention that the improvement of sound is ONLY
caused by altering height of the back check. The hammer is absolutely
free, there is no slight friction or touching the back check going up
towards the string.
That is exactly why nobody has yet come up with an clear answer.
Think again please!

Hi Andre
I stand by my answer, the back check IS touching the tail. The reason
you can't see it is that it only happens on a sharp blow that causes the
hammer to flex. You can't see this outside the piano. This is my humble
educated guess.
If I am right, just bendiing the backcheck back would solve the problem.
Of course the hammer would check lower than the rest, but it would proove
my hypothesis. But this is such an obvious attempt, that it must have
been tried already. So tell me, the backcheck was pulled back and that
didn't improve the sound?
Also is there a loss of sound in the p and pp and mp volume range, or
rather was the tone also improved in these ranges with the bc turned up?
That would also dis-prove my theory regarding hammer flex, but strengthen
my argument for contact with bc. But this should be seen then. Also did
any wise guy, turn the bc back down to see if the problem returned?

No its not a dunce cap!
