An alternative is an independent string maker in Canada: GC Strings @
416-755-7109, ask for Danny.  His strings are *superb*; we have installed
them in several of our concert Steinways with dramatic results.  Danny has
Steinway scales on record.

Not to say there aren't other good winders, but of the four makers we've used
- Schaff, Mapes, Isaac, and GC (in Toronto) - GC's have definitely sounded
the cleanest and most uniform.

I prefer strings from G&C in Canada.

They do require a pattern, and the strings are somewhat more expensive, but
are the best on the market.
