Ed, If the folks there are serious about having you (or others) look at different halls around, there are several on the west coast that would be worth the trip. In terms of recent halls, one of the best is the new recital hall at UC Santa Cruz. It fits your basic criteria, has phenomenal (and wonderfully tunable) acoustics, etc. Others would include Knuth Hall at SF State U., a new recital hall at Holy Hames College in Oakland, Herz Hall at Cal, and Dinkelspiel here at Stanford. Also, under construction, is the new Zipper Hall at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. Further, in addition to Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, there are several larger halls which might be worth a look, if for no other reason than context. Sounds like fun. Please let me know if you wish any additional information. Best.
