I use mine for broken strings too, just winding the coil on to a dummy
pin and transferring the coil to the piano.  You don't do this?  If you
need more space loosen the wire from the hitch, wind your coil,
re-attach the hitch and put the coil in place. You just have back off
the pin a half turn rather than two or three.

Try it sometime.
