The whole concept of string leveling was not
spoken of in either White's book, or for that matter, Wolfenden's
book,
The Art of Pianoforte Construction. Then progress happened. Besides,
I
reserve the right to continue studying the piano and, hopefully,
learning about them beyond what White and Reblitz (Wolfenden too, for
that matter) have taught us.

How very true.
And guess who has discovered unlevel strings in at least one piano
I have been tuning for 25 years that I was not aware of? Just by
feeling the trichord unisons in the tenor and treble it is amazing
how FEW are (feel) level. (especially near the upper termination).
And also in others as I go along.
We study, we observe, we ask questions, we experiment, we
hypothesize, reflect and communicate, and as you say hopefully learn
beyond those who have been before us.

So who the heck first floated this preposterous idea?
