Hello --

I've always used rayon, such as coat lining material, (or silk if I was
feeling classy). Oddly enough, black was a common color, or else peacock
blue or rose or gold (remember that these pianos were often played in
candlelight.) The really bright colors look a bit garish under artificial
illumination IMHO. Of course, your customer's idea of what looks nice is the
most important.
