Anne's suggestions are good and correct.

If, for any reason, you do not trust the dog put your hand down, palm
away from the down, fingers straight down.  If the dog takes it in its
head to bite you it must turn its head to do so, giving you enough time
to pull your hand to safety.

Most dogs that are not comfortable with strangers in their space bark
not bite, but I have known a couple that gave no quarter or warning. 
They just tried to bite.

These are few, but they do exits.
