Warren is correct.  Most plastics, when burned, to give off phosgene, nerve
gas for WW I.  This only occurs when the plasics are showing flames, but
when they are just heated.  Plastics soften at a very much lower temperature
than at which they burn.

Care does need to be taken, but you do not need to wear a gas mask, unless
you like to look funny or scare the household.
