However, I think it is important to seperate the two components in the diagnostic phase. In the end though we are trying to create a single, integrated, sound producing device. I also second the notion of being careful not to flatten the sometimes delicate crown on older boards by over doing the bearing. As to plate flexing - have you noticed the amount of flex on some of the Baldwin's from around the 40's. I've run into a few where the tail of the plate sits about a 1/4 inch above the dowels with the bolts removed. I've seen enough of these that it almost seems like it was a factory approach to setting bass bearing at that time.
